Chennai Metro Water asks its customers to pay the tax immediately

In order to avoid disconnection, the Chennai Metro Water has asked its customers to pay the tax immediately. Chennai Metro Water in a statement has mentioned it is collecting water and sewerage tax which is part of property tax at 7 per cent per annum of the annual value fixed by the Corporation of Chennai. Barring four municipalities of Alandur, Ambattur, Thiruvottiyur and Madhavaram where the water and sewerage tax is part of property tax collected by Chennai Corporation, the consumers of remaining 38 municipalities should pay the cess.
The water and sewerage tax is a component of property tax and a statutory levy payable irrespective of any services availed by the consumers.
Nonpayment will lead to issue of revenue recovery notices and sealing the premises apart from disconnection of service lines.
