If the suggestion discussed in the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) gets implemented, Metropolitan Transport Corporation may have to compete with private players.

In a recently held meeting of CMDA sub-committee for traffic and transportation, talks were on to bring in private players to enter the sector. If the private players are done with a model, this will then be forwarded to the government, said members of meeting. This meeting included CMDA members, and others belonging to MTC, Chennai corporation, and state highways department.

According to officials and experts of public transport, they say at least 1500 buses are needed in addition to the existing count so as to meet the demands. They also add that the corporation will not be able to make further expansion in the city as big as Chennai.

This will definitely benefit the commuters with higher frequency of buses by entry of private players, and they can enjoy higher reliability and need not be dependent on autos or cabs.

These have however not received welcoming from MTC officials as they say this is not going to be healthy competitions. They add that these private players will only be interested in their service on arterial roads.
