Chennai to have improved water supply

Posted on: 16/Mar/2015 5:40:02 PM
If you had passed through the Pooonamallee high road recently, you would have noticed large trenches being dug for enabling pipelines to carry drinking water all the way from Chembarambakkam treatment plant. Once the project is done, many areas will be benefited with the supply of water. Works to lay two pipelines from this plant to Porur and all southern suburban areas up to Tambaram are fast progressing.

Currently, supply is being given to Porur for about 265 million litres per day (mld). From here, other southern parts of Chennai are receiving the supply.

Though the plant has got huge capacity of 530 mld, it has so far not been operated to its fullest capacity ever since its inception in 2007 due to the lack of pipelines for supplying drinking water to the city.

So far, 30 per cent of the work to lay the 265 mld pipeline along arterial road are over. This covers a distance of about 6.5 km. This 45 crore project is likely to get over by the end of May, say officials.

It is to be noted that the pipeline in existence between Chembarambakkam and Porur got damaged and caused leak about an year ago.
