Water scarcity in Chennai

Chennaites in southern suburbs are facing acute water shortage. People residing in Mullai Nagar in West Tambaram get drinking water once in 10 days. There is no water supply in the nearing Chitalapallam. There is severe water scarcity in Thirumagal Nagar.

When asked the concerned authorities about this, they said the reason for this is groundwater depletion and they have been supplementing the deficiency by enhancing additional borewells which will increase supply by 20 lakh litres per day. The municipality requires 125 litres per capita daily (lpcd) and the major source is Palar river bed, which supplies about 85 lpcd.

The residents are unhappy with the Pallavapuram municipality over the construction of a well on Sembakkam lake to tide over the water crisis. They believe this move will further reduce groundwater levels. The residents have met revenue divisional officer, Tambaram, and have expressed apprehensions over the municipality’s move.

To overcome the drinking water crisis, they have started fixing Reverse Osmosis water filter systems in the bore-wells.
