Chennai Metro Water and Sewerage Board have mentioned that the city is unlikely to suffer water cuts, at least till the end of July.

Poondi Sathyamurthi lake, Sholavaram Lake, Sembrabakkam lake and Puzhal lake are the main sources for water supply in Chennai. Krishna river water from Andhra is also one of the main supplies to Chennai. The water managers expressed fear over the lack of Krishna water supply from January to April, as per the agreement. As against the stipulated quantity of 4tmcft of water to be supplied to Tamil Nadu from January to April, Tamil Nadu has realized only a quantity of 1.74tmcft from January to March 21 at the TN border.

With the city fast expanding, Metro water is struggling to meet the drinking water crisis. On Tuesday, the combined storage of drinking water reservoirs stood at 2.529tmcft as against the total storage capacity of 11.05tmcft. On the same day last year, the situation was slightly better with the storage level remained at 3.09tmcft.
