No space for pedestrians in Pallikkaranai!

The pedestrians using the roads in Pallikkaranai area are a worried and weary lot! Nonstop movement of vehicles and lack of enough manpower in the traffic police wing put them in undue frustration blocking their movement.

The pedestrians observed that crucial aspects related to safety are either neglected or not taken forward to arrive at a permanent solution by the elected representatives and traffic police - the most important problem being speeding. A joint secretary of one of the apartments in the area informed that there is no break from traffic in the morning and evening rush hours. Still, there are no arrangements to slow this.It is impossible for anyone to cross the road during rush hour.

Visible policing is absent on the road though the traffic police have installed two `blinking` signals (cautioning the motorists about pedestrians crossing) near National Institute of Wind Energy and at Mylai Balaji Nagar, visible policing is absent on the road. In an incident on February 2013, a 55-year-old woman and her younger sister were knocked down by an unidentified vehicle speeding towards Tambaram.

A traffic police official said traffic policemen were posted at three locations between Kaiveli intersection and Radial Road. Metal barricades have been placed on these locations and zebra crossings will be more visible within a few weeks.
