The prices of vegetables have shot up double after the 2 days heavy rain in Chennai.
Generally, vegetables arrive at Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market by 500 trucks from other states like Karnataka, Andhra, and Maharashtra. However, due to the recent heavy rains, only 200 trucks are plying resulting lower quantity of vegetables.

The prices of vegetables as sold on retail in Valasaravakkam area per kg in Rupees:
Tomato – 80, carrot – 70, Beans – 90, Broad Beans – 80, Okra (ladies finger) – 70, Brinjal – 50, Raw mango – 100, Cabbage – 30, Yam – 60, drumstick – 100, Taro – 50, Colocasia – 40, Bitter gourd – 40, onion – 35. Small onion – 80, ginger – 80, ivy gourd – 60, and green chilli – 40.
Flower prices have also shot up steeply. Jasmine was sold at Rs. 200 for 300 grams. Kanakambaram was sold at Rs. 80/- for 100 grams. Arali was sold at Rs. 150/- per kg. Samanthi was sold at Rs. 120/- per kg. Star rose & Panneer Rose were sold at Rs. 160/- per kg. Smapangi was sold at Rs. Rs. 50/- per 300 grmas.
Generally flowers are received from Hosur, Cudappah, Periyapalayam, and Krishnagiri districts. Since the flowers were rotted due to heavy rains, the prices have gone up steeply.
