Rescue and relief measures underway in Chennai

Since Monday night, Chennai has faced respite from the battering rain. heavy rain over the last week has caused flooding and breached rivers across the State. The death toll has reached 189.

Over 55000 people in Chennai were rescued by helicopters and boats. Citizens have set up relief measures including kitchens for the affected. The government has said that it has taken measures to ensure that there will be no more deaths related to the flooding. A minister said, We got in three days rainfall that was to be spread across three months. But we are making sure that no more life is lost. We are rescuing people and removing water from low-lying areas on a war footing.

Chennaities welcomed the sun that peeked out on Tuesday. However, people living on the banks of the Adyar, Cooum and Kosasthalaiyar rivers are still reeling. 789 spots in the city have been deemed flooded by the Chennai Corporation. 

Following the water from the Chembarambakkam reservoir, the Adyar river was in spate. Civic authorities and police worked actively to evacuate the affected people. Joining them were the Army, Navy, National Disaster Response Force and Coastal Security Group. Families were moved from 15 localities along the banks of the Adyar river, including Manapakkam, Jafferkhanpet, Saidapet and Kotturpuram.
