There is a great demand for buses in Chennai. It has been mentioned that 1000 buses are required every year for Chennai but the truth is there are only 66 buses.

When the AIADMK government assumed office - to March 2015, MTC added only 330 buses, which means 66 buses a year. To meet the target set by the Chennai Comprehensive Transportation Study, the corporation had to add at least 1,000 buses every year.

In 2013, the city had 3,200 operational buses. To reach the target of 7,000 buses in seven years, the corporation should have added at least 540 new buses a year. Another 500 new buses are required to replace aged buses.Chennai`s buses are getting increasingly crowded, with an average bus carrying 1,300 passengers per day.Across the state, 7,153 new buses were purchased. Of this, only 330 came to MTC, for Chennai.
