Chennai may have water scarcity

Posted on: 20/Aug/2016 12:59:27 PM
Puzhal lake is one of the important reservoir which supplies water to Chennai City. The reservoir’s capacity is 3300 million cubic feet.

The lake was filled to the brim because of heavy rains during the last year. Now because of the scorching heat, the water level is drastically coming down. According to yesterday statistics, the water level was 843 million cubic feet, Last month on the same day the water level was 1133 million cubic feet. Now it is seen that the water level is decreasing very much.

If the monsoon fails, the water level will come down because of the intensity of the heat. There is thus a risk of a shortage of drinking water in Chennai. At this stage the water is getting polluted because clothes are being washed here and also the buffaloes are bathed here. Naravarikuppam Panchayat is dumping the garbage on the banks of Puzhal Lake. The garbage dump looks like a hillock.  The lake is getting further polluted because the garbage is burnt. Though the public works department have been informed no action has been taken with regard to this.
