O.Panneerselvam marks an end to his tenure on his own. Governor of the state Vidyasagar Rao accepted OPS’s resignation letter and that of Council of Ministers today. In a letter rolled out following the acceptance of resignation, the Raj Bhavan has instructed the CM and Council of Ministers to continue functioning until alternate arrangements are done.
Following the demise of former J. Jayalalitha on 5th December, O. Panneerselvam was appointed as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Citing personal reasons, he has, on 5th February submitted his resignation. This move made by OPS allows V. K. Sasikala, Jayalalitha’s close aide who became the General Secretary of AIADMK party after the death of the latter to be more prone to turn into the CM.
I’m proposing my resignation from the post of Chief Minister due to personal reasons. I kindly request acceptance of resignation and relieve the entire Council of Ministers of Tamil Nadu whom I appointed on 6th December 2016.
His letter addressed to Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao also thanks the Prime Minister and governor for cooperating in all his functions throughout.
Amidst these, in the Jayalalitha’s disproportionate assets case, the verdict announcement will be done by the Supreme Court in another one week. Sasikala is notably involved in the case too and if convicted, she probably will not be able to continue as the CM if she happens to acquire the position.
Further, it is also to be noted that even after becoming the CM of the state, Sasikala will have to contest and win an election within six months of acquiring the position in order to continue as the CM.
