The state government transport minister, M. R. Vijayabhaskar informed that on the special occasion of the Pongal festive season, a total of 11983 special buses, including 5158 special buses, will be run.
He informed that the buses will be run on 11th, 12th, and 13th January. 3071 buses will be run on 11th January. 4255 buses will be run on 12th January. 4657 buses will be run on 13th January.
When the festive occasion gets over, to facilitate the return journey for the passengers, apart from the regular 2775 buses, an additional 3770 buses will be run on 15th, 16th, and 17th January.
In order to reduce the traffic congestion, the buses are scheduled to start from 5 different starting places – Anna Nagar, Saidapet Little Mount, Tambaram Sanatorium, Poonamallee bus terminus.
During the period from 11th January to 13th January, the travellers by cars and other vehicles can avoid moving via Tambaram and Perungalathur and choose the option of alternative routes – via Thirukazhukundram-Chengalpattu or Sriperumbudur-Chengalpattu.

29 special bus booking counters – 26 in Koyambedu Bus terminus, 2 in Tambaram Sanatorium, 1 in Poonamallee Bus terminus - will be set up operating from 9th January.
Special teams have been formed to check and monitor excessive charges imposed in the omnibuses.
