Don’t be surprised when you come across 4 new mechanical sweepers in Chennai. Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC is all set to employ four mechanical sweepers on the Chennai city roads. The main purpose of this was to save and protect the motorists from the dust that cause many respiratory issues plus accidents.

On 4th of April 2018 a trial test of a mechanical sweeper was conducted in the popular Rippon buildings in Chennai and it attracted the attention of many there. This test was conducted in the presence of Mr. D. Karthikeyan who is Chennai Corporation Commissioner. He and many senior officials monitored this trial test.

According to a Chennai Corporation official it is now clear that civic body would purchase as many as 4 mechanical sweepers so the effective cleaning of the roads could be possible. He also spoke about how after the trial test the mechanical sweepers would be deployed on the roads and that with the approval from the commissioner.

It is worthy to note that the mechanical sweepers are modules attached with the trucks and they function as per the principle of vaccum cleaners. It is interesting to note that the Chennai Corporation has as many as 12 mechanical sweepers with limited features.

The official threw light on how the 12 mechanical sweepers could only sweep 1.5 metres of road once whereas the new four mechanical sweepers are very efficient as they would clean and suck dust to a width of 3 metres. Procurement would be done within a week and allotment of the sweepers to the zones would be done afterwards.

Each mechanical sweeper cost amount of Rs 62 lakh and these sweepers would be used to clean the arterial roads.

Dust of quantities of 2 to 2.5 tonnes could be cleaned and stored by these mechanical sweepers. These would later be dumped into the dumping yards.
