Sembakkam Lake in Chennai to be restored soon

Present between Tambaram and Medavakkam, Sembakkam is an important residential locality in South Chennai. The lake present in Sembakkam is now making news.

It is known that the restoration works of Sembakkam Lake are long due. The news that has emerged now is the restoration of Sembakkam Lake would start soon. This Sembakkam Lake has got borders in Sembakkam, Hasthinapuram and Chitlapakkam.

For over 18 years, the restoration of Pallikaranai marsh has been done by Care Earth Trust. This Care Earth Trust in combination with IIT Madras and Nature Conservancy India has proposed to restore the wetland that is disappearing.  For this purpose of restoration science based solutions plus bringing of stake holders together would be done. Recently the first meeting with the community members took place.

According to Jayshree Vencatesan who is a researcher and a member of Care Earth Trust, combining science and community engagement is superb. She further spoke about how restoration of Sembakkam Lake would be done using tested scientific solutions. She explained how de-silting of lake belt could be very fragile and many factors must be taken into account so that integrity of the belt is not destroyed. Jayshree Vencatesan later spoke about how the study involving the pattern of the kind of the pollutants.

Demands from residents regarding the restoration and rejuvenation of both Sembakkam and Chitlapakkam Lake have been going on for two and half decades. Before commencing the work, the full extent of Sembakkam Lake, Chitlapakkam Lake and Selaiyur Lake as per the PWD details must be ensured. This was said by none other than convenor of Chitlapakkam Residential Associations Coordination Committee, Mr. P. Viswanathan.

It is worthy to note that TWAD or Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board is presently supplying 9 lakh litres of water ever day to Chitlapakkam town panchayat whose real population now is more than 60000.
