The sensational piece of news that has come out now is CCTV cameras would soon be fitted on government buses in Tamil Nadu. This would include the buses operated by MTC or Metropolitan Transport Corporation. The main objective of this is to keep a check on the road plus finding the reason or cause for the accidents.

On Monday, 28th may 2018, all roads lead to the famous Pallavan House and a road safety review meeting of various state corporations took place here. It was attended by many officials and others belonging to the transport corporation.

According to a top MTC official, for the improvement of road safety the funds allotted by state transport department would be utilized. He also threw light on how tenders would be floated once the transport corporations get the nod. It is important to note that nearly 75 % of accidents involving MTC buses have reported damage in front of the bus. This has created an impression that the MTC bus driver was responsible for the accident.  Mr. Anbhazagan from Netaji Transport Union expressed few things and spoke about how the government bus drivers get booked without much investigation. It is the responsibility of these drivers to prove their innocence.  He further spoke about how in Chennai city accidents take place due to rash driving of the two wheelers.

He threw light on the fact that cases are filed against the bus drivers unless these drivers go out of their way and collect the CCTV camera proofs regarding the accidents from the nearby educational institutions or commercial establishments.

The important piece of information is the proposed CCTV cameras would be installed on the bus exterior above the left rear view mirror. This would be of great use to the investigating agencies that are involved in finding the cause for the accident.

Once a case is filed against a bus driver their driving licences are suspended for a period of 6 months of time. Since there is no other source of income the drivers find their lives tough in the above mentioned 6 months.

Mr. Suresh who is an advocate has got different view regarding the accidents made by the drivers of MTC buses. He spoke about how MTC bus drivers violate the traffic rules and get involved in the accidents. This advocate deals with many road accident cases is known. He later hinted that the vehicles that are larger in size are often targeted by the traffic police and they file cases against the larger vehicles involved in the accidents. He then spoke about how there was no scientific measures adopted in the whole process and how that was not acceptable.

It is now said that by installing CCTV cameras in the MTC buses the uncertainties would be ended. This was later confirmed by few MTC officials.
