In the month of January, ICF or Integral Coach Factory in Chennai turned many heads when it launched its integrated solid waste management facility so that the waste of its staff quarters could be handled.

There are as many as 4 residential colonies in the industrial complex and around 3500 families live there are known. Similar to Chennai Corporation that follows source segregation model this ICF also follows the same but the difference is the streets are litter free, at the end of street corners there are no overflowing dustbins.

The credit for the green campus must not be given to the residents but to the conservancy workers who does amazing hard work day in and day out.

Every day as much as six tonnes of domestic waste is being generated by the 4 residential colonies in this place and 120 workers have been employed to handle this waste. Every last bit of waste is collected by these conservancy workers and taken to the facility and this was confirmed by the resident of East Colony. Every day at 7 am the workers with the help of their tricycles collect all the waste bags.  It is important to mention that 50 kg of waste per day is handled by each worker and this is on average. There are as many as 18000 conservancy workers of Chennai Corporation and they are responsible for handling 315kg waste.

The worker to garbage ratio is very important and this factor plays a vital role in the green campus initiative. As much as 90 % of domestic waste is either recycled or composted and just 10 % waste reaches Kodungaiyur based corporation landfill. The conservancy workers of ICF work in teams and they ensure that both bio-degradable as well as non-biodegradable wastes are separated at the facility. The workers are paid decent amount as their salaries by ICF.
