People living in Chennai city would surely have come across the popular US Consulate that is located in Anna Salai. Constructed in the year 1969, US consulate in Chennai city is now making sensational news.

It is now said that this US consulate would be renovated soon and is looking out for the clearance from the CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority. Recently Mr. Alexis Wolff who is US consulate spokesperson expressed his thoughts and spoke about how this consulate in Chennai city is dedicated to provide a safe and modern space for their staffs as well as the visitors. He later spoke about how the upcoming renovation would be tremendous as it would help to modernise the facility for US citizens plus the increasing number of Indians seeking to go to USA. However the details about the renovation plans were not revealed by Mr. Alexis Wolff.

Discussions are going on with the US consulate regarding the renovation and this was confirmed by a top official belonging to CMDA. It is important to note that the project has got 2 components.

The first component is the partial infilling of existing courtyard within the walls of the present building. The second component is the building of an electrical demarcation room that adjoins the compound to provide access to the city utility staff. The Open space rule is applicable for renovating the building or not is the issue now. As per the sources it is now brought out that US consulate is of the opinion that the open space rule is not applicable.

It is now revealed that this US consulate that was built in 1969 predated the formation of CMDA. The renovation that takes place totally inside the existing building would not need any permission. This was also according to the sources. It is worthy to mention here that there is also one more issue and that is the submission of permit application and both PAN card as well as Aadhaar card is mandatory for that. A hard copy would be submitted by the US consulate and it would be modified on the website for submission. An official of CMDA said approval for renovation would be issued.
