According to the fisheries department, about 331 tonnes of plastic waste are weeded out from Kaasimedu Fishing Harbour. Necessary works are on the go to fill up the harbor areas that are excavated. This involves use of 50 truckloads.

Friday marks to be the World Ocean Day. On this day, special programs were held by the fisheries department to spread awareness about maintaining plastic-free sea. Government schools across Chennai had conducted special events like essay writing competition and elocution competitions where the core topic was about plastic pollution. There were competitions held at the Chetpet Eco Park as well.

It has been over 2 decades since we noticed thorough cleanup of the harbor. During this ban period of 61 days, volunteers indulged in cleaning activities and removed 4 tonnes of plastic waste. However, for the very first time, the government has decided to do the job.

According to Kasimedu fishermen, the management committee has not taken responsibility to properly maintain the fishing harbor. There have been demands and requests to develop the harbor since 1996. Back in 2013, a makeover was given to the harbor, but due to improper maintenance by the Chennai port management, there is need for repairs yet again.
