From 11 am on Thursday, 27th December 2018, a new traffic pattern would be present at the Chennai airport. The important point is there will be separate entry as well as exit lanes to get to the arrival and departure halls of both international and domestic terminals. Till now there has been just one entry and exit and it would have three entry points from now.
The vehicles now take a right turn at the ramp after dropping the passengers at the domestic terminal is known. These vehicles would now take left turn and drive up a ramp near the airport metro station and them turn right and reach the departure terminal. It is said that the cars that come to drop the passengers at the international terminal would make their entry through a new gate and take a left turn. Then these vehicles would drive up the farther arm of the flyover and take a right turn to reach the departure terminal before driving down the ramp near metro rail station.
The important piece of information is vehicles reaching the arrival terminals on the ground floor would also follow the same circular pattern. For those vehicles that are coming out of the airport, as many as 3 points have been opened on the GST Road so that the vehicles could take U turn and proceed towards Pallavaram. As per the press release it is clear that there would be separate lane for pick- up and other for reaching the parking lot on the ground floor. Accessing the lane to the parking lot would not be possible for the cars heading to pick-up passengers and these cars would have to leave the airport. From the designated pick-up points, the vehicles in the parking lot would have to pick-up the passengers. It is important to mention that in front of buildings private cars could pick-up passengers from both domestic and international terminals. Cabs except those belonging to Ola would have to pick-up the passengers from the designated spots present in the parking area. For this purpose, Ola has inked a deal with the airport to have designated parking lot and pick-up point.
According to an official belonging to AAI, vehicular traffic at the airport would be speeded up. He then threw light on the 10 minute free time for the vehicles and said it would continue. He hinted that the parking charges would remain same for now. Finally he spoke about the toll booths and signage that have been set up to avoid any confusion.
It must not be forgotten that previously all the vehicles going towards the domestic and international departure terminals would drive up a flyover and come down at the farther end of the flyover past the international terminal for exiting purpose. As there was only one entry and exit for all the vehicles, this pattern was time consuming. In the month of April in 2018, the new traffic pattern was put on trial and was later fine tuned.
