All the blood banks in TN would be screened

Just recently the people belonging to Tamil Nadu were shaken up by a sensational piece of news. The news was about a 24 year pregnant woman in Sattur who was given contaminated blood supplied by a blood bank and as a result of that she got infected with HIV. It must be taken into account that proper screening of the blood stocks were not carried out. The latest news is the government of Tamil Nadu has ordered the screening of all the blood stocks present in the blood banks in TN. The man who donated his blood to the pregnant woman was just 19 years of age and it is revealed now that he tried to kill himself by consuming poison due to the fear of being questioned by the police officials. On Wednesday, 26TH December 2018, health minister, Mr. C. Vijayabaskar, grabbed many eyeballs when he spoke about the termination of 3 lab technicians of the blood bank attached to the government hospital at Sattur near Virudhunagar. These three lab technicians were responsible for causing tragedy to the 24 year old pregnant woman.

The health minister later expressed his unhappiness about this incident. He spoke about how the incident was shocking and disheartening and revealed the fact that these types of incidents did not take place in TN till now. He also promised to take strict action against those who were responsible for this tragedy.

To ensure the virus does not affect the foetus, a detailed medical treatment is underway for the pregnant woman. He added that the government would provide financial assistance for the affected family. He explained how lakhs of people were provided with the blood component every year and how there have been no complaints like this. At the Sattur police station, the affected woman and her husband lodged a complaint against those who were responsible for this contaminated blood supply issue. The news gathered was a FIR has been registered against the doctors and nurses involved in the blood transfusion and also against the blood bank workers for their medical negligence under the IPC sections. The blood stocks present in all the blood banks would be reviewed so that no such incidents take place in the future. This was confirmed by the government.

Mr. R. Manoharan, joint director of health services at Virudhunagar shared his views. He spoke about how the 8 month pregnant woman had haemoglobin deficiency and she found that out when she went for a check-up at a private clinic at Sattur. The doctors advised her for blood transfusion and she underwent blood transfusion at the government hospital in Sattur. He finally explained how at the time of the blood transfusion she was provided with HIV contaminated blood.
