Here comes a superb piece of news for the residents of Chennai city. It is well known that the traffic congestion along Vandalur- Kelambakkam stretch is very high and this has been creating many issues for the people using this stretch often. A flyover is being built here at a cost of Rs 55 crores is known.

The latest news is this construction of 6-lane flyover would be completed by the end of the month of July and it would then be opened for the public. The important information is traffic woes along the Vandalur- Kelambakkam stretch would come down once this flyover gets opened for the public.

It is amazing to note that more than 1.2 lakh vehicles use this stretch on an average along the Grand Southern Trunk Road or GST Road. It was pointed out by some officials belonging to the state highways department that after the opening of ORR or Outer Ring Road for traffic, the vehicle density had doubled in the stretch.

Every day in the peak hours of time, trucks proceeding to Chennai Port via ORR, vehicles from major Special Economic Zones or SEZ OMR and Mahindra World City converge at this road junction resulting in heavy traffic congestion. In addition to that, during the festival season or in the Monday mornings or in Saturday evenings, private buses also create huge traffic issues and traffic is brought to halt.

In the month of September in 2016, a flyover was proposed at this junction so that the heavy vehicles could use it to reach the ORR directly. At the junction near Vandalur Zoo and Crescent College, vehicles proceeding towards Chengalpet from Chennai could also avoid traffic congestion.

It is important to note that the approach road on north side of the flyover begins 50 m away from ORR approach roads. The point is other end is 700 m away and the elevated portion alone is 270 m. The entire flyover is made up of 9 decks (slabs between 2 pillars of a flyover) and this is as per the approved design. Out of 9 decks, 7 decks have been completed and work is going on to build the approach road decks on both the sides. The information is total width of the flyover would be 23 m and 3 lanes would be made available on both the sides. The local residents spoke about how a traffic signal was installed recently as the work is underway.
