The latest news is Corporation of Chennai would be demolishing the encroachments along the roads near the metro corridors in north Chennai and make over would be given to the roads. To facilitate non-motorised transit in the vicinity of metro stations, Chennai Corporation would demolish the encroachments along the roads belonging to north Chennai.
Metro rail corridors present in zones like Tiruvottriyur, Manali, Madhavaram and Tondiarpet in north Chennai were inspected on Tuesday by the officials belonging to the corporation. It was later mentioned by an official that in the first phase land along Tiruvottriyur High Road was handed over to CMRL for the development of infrastructure including footpaths and cycle tracks. He then added that the road from Tondiarpet to Tiruvottriyur for a length of 9.9 m would get a very wide footpath and non-motorised network.
Finally, he highlighted that 25 m right of the way would be given and carriage way would be 7.5 m on the either side. For 4 different categories of vehicles, as many as 4 lanes would be developed by CMRL.
Dedicated lanes would be provided for cars and cycles. It must be noted that the footpaths would be 3 m wide along the redeveloped Tiruvottiyur High Road. It is revealed that both CMRL and the officials belonging to the corporation would study Smart City Projects in other cities and in T. Nagar. Later the project would be implemented to provide makeover to the roads in the vicinity of the metro rail corridor.
Import ant point is places like Korukkupet, Tondiarpet and Tiruvottriyur would get better designed road networks near metro rail corridors. An official explained about how encroachments along the roads must be demolished and wide footpaths, roads and cycle tracks would be developed.
To develop bicycle sharing system, corporation of Chennai has started identifying locations in north Chennai. It is brought out that till now the civic body has not identified any location in the area for the system. It is important to note that the bicycle sharing system has been implemented at 25 locations in places like Anna Nagar etc. In this month of July, another 25 locations along Poonamallee High Road and T. Nagar would be linked to the bicycle sharing system.
In the next phase, north Chennai neighbourhoods in the vicinity of metro stations would get the system. It is well known that Chennai Corporation or GCC is the civic body that governs Chennai city.
