Are you one amongst those who feel happy when not caught by the traffic police for violating the rules in Chennai? Wait!! You could be in trouble soon.

The information that has come out now is every day Chennai police are slapping atleast 12000 cases through contact-less enforcement system. Information collected is e-challans are being sent to the addresses against which the vehicles were registered. It is known that CCTV cameras catch many traffic rules violators. Police too play their roles to perfection by clicking the photos of the vehicle registration numbers of those fleeing the authorities.

It was later mentioned by a traffic police officer how the vehicle registration numbers were sent to the control room and how the addresses were got as per the RTO records. He added that challans were sent to these addresses.

The point is jumping the signals and stop lines, riding 2 wheelers without wearing helmets, driving car without putting seat belt are most common violations that generate most of the challans. As many as 500 police personnel belonging to TN special police armed reserve wing have been deployed by the Chennai city police to increase the vigilance. At many busy traffic junctions in Chennai, these personnel are present and they work with the traffic police.

It is worthy to mention that the traffic police wing is in the process of fixing bugs and by this the previous traffic violator database would be made available to the personnel in the field. Information is the traffic police personnel would be able to access the information in their hand held devices once it becomes operational.

At Anna Nagar in Chennai, 61 automated number plate recognition systems have been installed as a pilot project is known. Every day, these detect around 4000 traffic violations at 5 traffic junctions in Anna Nagar. It was revealed by police personnel that analysis of the violations was carried out and challans were sent to around 500 people.

People who violate the traffic rules must pay their fine amount within 24 hours after receiving the challan. About 40% of violators booked under the contact-less system pay their fines. This was confirmed by a senior police officer.
