Cricket and dance to promote positive gender roles among the Corporation School children

The Chennai Metro City Corporation, in collaboration with the British Council and Rotary Club of Madras East, launched the programme, ‘Changing Moves Changing Minds’ on Monday (26th August) to break gender stereotypes and spark conversations among young children on gender equality.

Thus, cricket and dance will be sued to promote positive gender roles in children studying in the Chennai Metro City Corporation Schools.

During the 1st Phase of this project, scheduled to be implemented from November this year, 21000 students in 70 Corporation Schools will benefit from the programme. The Civic Body runs 281 schools with a total combined strength of more than 83000.

A 6-week curriculum has been developed in partnership with the Royal Academy of Dance and the Marylebone Cricket Club, which owns the Lord’s Cricket ground, and master trainees will impart training to 140 corporation school teachers in the next 2 months.

Janaka Pushpanathan, Director, British Council (South India), said, ‘What the programme is aiming to do is to have positive and challenging gender conversations. Cricket and dance are the 2 fields about which both India and U. K. are passionate  and the expertise from the premier institutions such as MCC and Royal Academy will provide a platform for the teachers to work on!’

The officials further informed that this year’s ‘Wings to Fly’ programme in which selected students from corporation schools would be taken on educational tours abroad will also focus on gender equality. 8 students who prevail in an elocution competition on the selected theme will get a chance to travel to London.’

P. Kumaravel Pandian, Deputy Commissioner (Education), Greater Chennai Corporation, said, ‘We are glad that our students will benefit from such programmes. Effor4ts will be made to implement it in all the schools run by the Corporation.’ He also expressed hope that the programme would be implemented in all schools in Tamil Nadu from both the government and the private sectors.
