Chennai to get Krishna water after a gap of 1 month

Water managers could feel happy now as Chennai city would receive Krishna water by Thursday.

A month back, AP had suspended the discharge of Krishna water to TN and this was as per the officials belonging to WRD or Water Resources Department. Truth is the demand for the drinking water could be managed for the next 6 months if they get sufficient water. From the dam in AP, 1000 cusecs of water have been released already but Chennai hasn’t yet received the water.

By Thursday, Krishna water would reach Chennai city and this was according to a senior officer of WRD. The lockdown to contain Coronavirus has been responsible for the suspension of the water release from AP. Point is the staff could not attend their work due to lockdown.

It was highlighted by an officer that initially the water would have been released on 20th May but the release has been delayed. It must not be forgotten that earlier TN was receiving 450 cusecs to 500 cusecs of water from AP and from the month of February the discharge was reduced to 248 cusecs.

The department has already written to the officials of AP for providing 3000 mcft water and the total lockdown lead to the suspension before the scheduled period.  Unlike the last year 2019, Chennai residents would not have water issues in 2020 and this was confirmed by the officials of WRD. The fact is TN did not receive sufficient water in 2018 and this lead to water scarcity in the summer of 2019.
