The fresh lockdown in Chennai city from 19th June till 30th June has made many retail shops with low stocks. The lockdown had prevented the retail shops in Chennai to purchase the essential items.

It was pointed out by Mr. S. Soundarajan, south Chennai president of Vanigar Sangangalin Peravai that from 19th of June there has been no business. He explained that GCC has provided vehicle passes to deliver loads to the shops but the government officials have not been accepting them from the start of the new lockdown.

On 24th June, Wednesday, all the retail and wholesale shops would be closed. It is known that recently two traders passed away in the police custody at Sathankulam for opening their shops beyond the stipulated time. Point is another reason for the strike by traders could be due to the above said incident. From the past week, the retail shops have been running out of stocks. After the fresh lockdown was imposed, the dealers stopped supplying products to the shops.

It was brought out by an owner of a supermarket in Chennai that demand has been more and the shops get lesser products. He hoped that this crisis would be over in the next month. In the past few days, there has been a reduction in the number of customers too. This was according to some retailers.

An owner of a supermarket in Washermanpet was of the view that even before this fresh lockdown the shops were running out of essential commodities because none of the dealers was willing to supply products to the needs.

The shortage of staff has been cited as the main reason by the dealers. The shop owners were unable to collect their stocks due to the strict police checks. It is known that many Coronavirus positive cases have been reported from this place in north Chennai.
