Retail vegetable prices have increased in Chennai city. The main reasons for this were due to disruptions in the supply chain plus due to the constant hike in the fuel rates.

In the retail stores in Chennai, most veggies were priced at Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg. This has been brought to light by the residents belonging to various suburbs of Chennai. This week, the rates of tomatoes went to Rs 70 per kg in some places. A kilogram of potatoes was priced around Rs 50. Point is the reasonably priced veggies are onions and cabbages in the retail markets.

Pushcart vegetable vendors were also selling the vegetables at different rates. This was as per a resident belonging to Anna Nagar West. She mentioned that the tomatoes cost anywhere between Rs 55 to Rs 70 per kg. A kilogram of beans and broad beans costs above Rs 60 in her area.

It must be noted that for just 2 persons in a family an amount of Rs 250 has been spent on a quarter kilogram of 4-5 vegetables every 2or 3 days. Another resident belonging toMogappair spoke about how people have shifted to vegetarian foods as fish and meat etc were not available during the lockdown. This was also responsible for the prices of vegetables to increase in the retail shops.

It was later pointed out by some vegetable traders of Thirumazhisai market that fewer arrivals were one of the reasons why the prices were pushed up by 10 to 20 percent this week.
