The Koyambedu wholesale market that was shut down after it turned out to be a Coronavirus hotspot is making news now. This important market in Chennai plus other markets across TN would soon be reopened for the public. This was assured by the TN state government. The date on which the Koyambedu wholesale market would be re-opened would be announced soon.
On Monday, 24th August, CM of TN Mr. E. Palaniswami had a meeting with the representatives of various traders organisations. He assured the traders that the Koyambedu market that has been shut down for three months would be reopened soon.
Fruit, flowers, vegetable and meat markets in TN would also be reopened again. There are chances that the Koyambedu wholesale market complex might be re-opened in the month of September.
The deputy CM of TN Mr. O. Paneerselvam would be returning to Chennai on Wednesday and it is now said that the decision on the reopening of the market would be taken after some discussions with him. This was according to Mr. A.M. Vikramaraja, state president, TN Vanigar Sankangalin Peramaippu.
Information collected is presently in repair works to improve the basic infrastructure that is going on in the Koyambedu market. The opening of the sealed shops plus withdrawal of the cases against traders in the lock down and extension of operating hours for the shops were some of the demands put by the trader’s body.
The meeting also saw the presence of the Members of the Federation of All Traders Associations of Koyambedu market complex.
