From 16th of November, Koyambedu market in Chennai would be re-opened and the retail vendors have been gearing up for the reopening of this important market,
The authorities have been urged by these retail vendors regarding relaxing the restrictions to prevent further spreading of Covid-19 infection at the market.
According to a retail vendor, currently here are traffic restrictions at the Koyambedu market with just one entry and exit allowed and management of vehicle numbers into the market at a time. He added that lots of crowding occurs at one point of time due to the time restrictions at the market.
Time restrictions have been causing not only safety issues but also overcrowding. Truth is that the measures could be relaxed moderately to avoid crowding in the market. There are some vendors who have been requesting the opening of the tomato market especially.
A tomato vendor spoke about how currently the market gets 100 trucks of produce daily. He hinted that the space available now is not sufficient. He wanted the space to be re-opened so that the business would do well.
The lack of enough space has resulted in vendors purchasing more expensive stock at lesser quality. For the sake of smoother business, the vendor associations have requested for the opening of the market.
Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer of Koyambedu Vegetable Merchant’s Association spoke about how requests have been made for opening of more sections of the market for better business. He was hoping for 10% more business once when the retail vendors come back.
