Heavy rains in Chennai last fortnight has made the prices of vegetables to fluctuate. It is now said that in this week the wholesale prices of all vegetables would increase by Rs 10 to Rs 15 a kg.

It must be noted that while vegetables were sold cheaply when it rained heavily the rates increased in the following days as retail traders thronged the market. In the coming days, the rates would increase and this was as per some wholesalers at the Koyambedu vegetable market complex.

It was pointed out by Mr. S. Chandran, secretary of Federation of Wholesale Vegetable Market Association that the rates of the veggies would increase as the retail traders would return to the market bringing business to normalcy. Last week saw a drop in the prices of the vegetables by Rs 10.

The prices of chow chow and cabbage went down by Rs 7 per kg and Rs 5 per kg respectively. On the next day, the prices got revived.  Mr Chandran gave the example of a drumstick that was sold for Rs 15 per kg and how it went to Rs25 per kg on Saturday. He added that the arrivals of vegetables like beetroot, cabbage and carrots etc would reduce if there were rains.
