In the month of February, the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board or CMWSSB would be fixing digital water meters with AMR or automated meter readings at all commercial establishments in Chennai.

It must be taken into account that CMWSSB has already fixed digital water meters in about 10,500 buildings in Chennai. Totally, 12708 commercial and water intensive establishments like companies, hotels and educational institutions were identified across the city for fixing these digital water meters. The project got delayed due to the Coronavirus pandemic and this was according to some officials. The funding for this project is done by Smart City Mission.

Water-intensive category includes the commercial establishments that use 500 KL of water. These would be charged Rs 60 for 1000 litres of water. The rates would be different for different categories. It is worthy to note that meters would record and transmit data to a central system through radio frequency. From the area office or from head offices, it would be possible for the officers to read and monitor these new digital water meters. Text messages regarding the bill would be set to the consumers. Currently, meter readings are being taken by manual checking system and by hand held devices. The revenue of CMWSSB would increase by 15% to 20% after the digital water metres get installed.

Along the bill amount, the cost of the meters would be collected from the consumers. This was revealed by the officials. Point is that these meters have been procured from France based Hitron.
