Women to get concessions during their bus travel in TN

For the sake of encouraging public transportation in the town buses in TN, women passengers would be offered concessions!!
This was one amongst the promises that were made by the ruling party in the election manifesto for the assembly elections on 6th April 2021. It is learnt that the AIADMK party would be giving 50 percent concession to the women passengers for their travel in the town buses if they get voted to power again. It is known that DMK has announced free travel for the women passengers in the government town buses in TN in its manifesto.
The state transport undertakings have been witnessing a steep fall in patronage in the last few years and the promises by these 2 political parties have come at this point of time.
The MTC bus fares were hiked in the year 2018 and due to this the average number of passengers travelling in the MTC buses has come down from 47lakhs per day in 2016-17 to 30lakhs per day in 2019-20. The Coronavirus pandemic in 2020 has further resulted in the reduction of the patronage in the MTC buses and it came down to 19lakhs per day. The public transportation would get boosted by reduction of fares plus by providing concessions or free travel etc. This was mentioned by some experts.
Point is that 77% of trips by women in the Indian cities are by walk, cycle, or by public transport and this was as per census results. This has been highlighted by Mr. J. Sivasubramanian, manager, transport systems, ITDP.
