Never before in the past there was a huge interest in sports other than cricket in Chennai!!
Now, everything has changed suddenly. The reason for that was mainly due to the performance of Indian participants at the recently concluded Olympics. It is now brought out that the trainers have been receiving lots of enquiries on athletics especially javelin.
It was a sensational effort from the Indians at the Tokyo Olympics and they won 7 medals in the world’s biggest sports arena.
According to Mr. Venkatesan Kamalakanan, a coach and owner of Nungambakkam based Future Champz Sport Academy parents were scared to send their kids to the sports academies for nearly 2 years due to the threat of Coronavirus pandemic. He added that the recent Olympics had changed the mindset of the parents and they are now sending their kids to the academies. He concluded that many parents have enquired about javelin. It is well known to us that coaching for javelin is very rare in Chennai city.
Fact is that the Covid-19 infection pandemic has not yet got over but the enthusiasm of the parents regarding sports has increased now and they are sending their kids to the academies. The success of Indian sports persons at the Olympics have motivated many now in the pandemic. The children have been showing keen interest now. Athletics coach belonging to Pallavaram in Chennai Mr. Chandra Bose spoke about how the number of students joining the academies has gone up by 10percent.
He was surprised to see so many children showing huge interest now after the Olympics. Truth is that now many want to achieve in the international arena. In the rural areas, not many are showing interest in sports like weight lifting etc and this has made many coaches worried. It must not be forgotten that India won a silver medal in the Olympics recently in the weight lifting category.
Information is that the students are now more interested in athletics, javelin, boxing and silambam etc. Mr. Muthukumar, weightlifting coach from Pudukottai mentioned that the coaches were happy to witness youngsters showing keen interest now.
