In the north Chennai, Manali zone has got the least population and this zone is making news now for the wrong reasons.
There are several industries located in this zone and due to this the pollution is very high here. In addition, this zone has been affected more than any zone by natural disasters also. The fact is that due to these reasons the population density is very low in this zone when compared to other 14 GCC zones. Even after this area was brought under the limits of corporation, a section of residents are involved in farming activities. Point is that there are many wage labourers and tribal people in this zone. Other zones in Chennai have got more than 30000 voters whereas Manali zone has got less than 3000 voters only.
The inadequate infrastructure plus the various issues faced by the residents here in getting the financial assistance from the government has caught the attention of many now. These issues of the residents have come to the light only after the election campaign for the upcoming elections.
It is shocking to note that Manali zone doesn’t even have proper toilet facilities or public health facilities etc. It is known that other 14 GCC zones have reaped huge benefits from smart city projects or by other civic infrastructure projects etc.
It was brought out by a person belonging to the Irula tribe in the Manali zone that in the monsoon season there was knee high deep water near his house in Sadayankuppam and it caused many issues. He added that whenever water gets released from the reservoirs due to heavy rains this zone would remain flooded for many days. Even after 10 years of coming under the corporation, the infrastructure here has not improved. He concluded that a community hall would be superb as many would be able to use it during the floods.
It is well known to us that Chennai has been ‘open defecation free’ some time back. The Irula tribe men in this zone have been forced to defecate in the open. It is learnt that none of the Irula tribe persons were able to get government jobs. The Irula tribe persons want the new councillors to coordinate with the officers belonging to the corporation for the sake of welfare measures. The good news is that soon the transport connectivity in Manali zone would become better as the bridge works have been taken up.
