The State Highways Department, Police Department and the Chennai Metro Rail Limited would be burning the midnight oil soon!!
It is learnt that these above said departments would be working on a plan to decongest the Chennai city. The decongestion would be carried out by facilitating organic expansion to the Chennai city outskirts. According to a senior official it was clear that the main objective behind was to strengthen the infrastructure in the areas in the next 5 years. He added that hubs would be developed outside Chennai city and it would be similar to what Noida and Gurgaon are for Delhi. It is a known fact that these satellite hubs have played a huge role in decongesting a big and populous city like Delhi.
In the future, western suburbs belonging to Chennai would be decongested and this would be carried out by the above-mentioned 3 important departments. Now, metro rail works have been going on and it is said that ECR or East Coast Road in Chennai plus Chennai-Tirupati Highways and Bengaluru Highways would be widened. Bottlenecks that are present in places in Chennai like Ambattur, Avadi, Thiruninavur, Poonamallee, Kottivakkam, Neelankarai etc would be cleared for the sake of free traffic flow. This was mentioned by a senior officer.
As per some official sources belonging to the Highways Department, various projects that would be taken up are upgrading ECR from Chennai to Kanniyakumari to four lanes and making road from Chennai to Kanniyakumari via Trichy and Madurai from 4 to 6 lanes. There are also plans to widen the road from Chennai Port to Manali via Tiruvottiyur junction to decongest traffic. It must be taken into account that the road widening and improvement works have been already going on in Kancheepuram district. Bypasses in Tiruttani, Illuppur and RasIpuram have been going on also.
