Whats new about the re-designing canal work taken up by GCC?

In the month of November in 2021, many parts belonging to the Chennai city were flooded due to very heavy rains. To prevent this from happening again, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has prepared a project to re-design the canals that drain water to the rivers.

To increase the speed of water flow, hydraulic modelling would be used by the project. This would in turn reduce inundation or lessen its duration. Flow of waters to rivers would become more by creating liners, sidewalls and beds on the canals. This was mentioned by an official belonging to GCC.

He threw light about construction of drains based on hydraulic modelling and run-off volume. Point is that the design of the drain network must be revised. Surface tension would be reduced and water flow would become more by creating liners, sidewalls and beds etc. There are chances that hindrances to be removed and canals to be widened in places where they have narrowed.

It is noteworthy that Chennai has got 8 canals that collect rainwater from the storm water drains or SWD. They are Captain Cotton canal, Kodungaiyur canal, MGR canal, Manapakkam canal, Otteri Nullah, Mambalam canal, Virugambakkam canal and Buckingham canal. The PWD is responsible for maintaining Otteri Nullah, Virugambakkam canal and Buckingham canal whereas GCC is responsible for maintaining the remaining canals.

Earlier, the distance between 2 manholes was 5m and now this has been reduced to 2metres. The GCC has already worked on re-design of new drains by the above mentioned work. Point is that GCC faced issues in de-silting them in November rains.
