Testing of the air quality has been intensified by the TNPCB or Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board as the residents belonging to Tiruvottiyur and Manali have continued to complain about pungent odour in their localities. For the last 15 days, an odour similar to LPG gas leakage has been troubling many residents in north Chennai. On Monday and on Tuesday, there were complaints from many residents regarding eye irritation caused by the pungent odour.

Detailed study of air quality in the north Chennai was important and TNPCB was given instructions regarding the detailed study by Mr. V. Siva Meyyanathan, minister for forest and environment. Many residents belonging to Tiruvottiyur and Manali have already complained about breathlessness.

It is learnt that Mr. Mahesh Krishnamoorthy, convenor of Swadeshi Jagran Manch or SJM has called upon TNPCB to take immediate action. He spoke about how PCB must conduct a detailed study in Thiruvottiyur and in Manali. He added that there are several industries in the Manali area and it has to be checked if these industries were responsible for the issue.

It must be noted that on Tuesday 19th July 2022 4 to 5 school students complained of eye irritations and medical camps were conducted. Point to be noted is that there have been reports regarding slack emissions by Chennai Climate Action Group based on 2019 and 2020 data belonging to TNPCB. The reports have brought about the laxity on the part of industries belonging to Ennore and Manali to monitor and report emissions. According to some environmentalists this might be the cause for the pungent odour in the air for more than 15 days.

The cause for the pungent odour must be found out soon and this was mentioned by Mr. Sujith Ramkumar of Climate Study Centre in Chennai. He explained that there has been continuous monitoring of the issue.
