The homeless and uncared people roaming in the streets of Chennai have been reunited with their families!! Sound`s sensational isn`t it!!
The Greater Chennai police have rescued these persons from the streets under Kaaval Karangal project. This project was launched in April in 2021 is known. It must be noted that this initiative was launched with the aim to rescue and care for destitute persons with support from NGOs. Under the initiative these destitute are sheltered in the homes after good medical care, counsel them and then reunite them with their family members.
On board trains, some of these destitute were abandoned by their family members and this was mentioned by a senior police personnel. He added that after reaching the last stations they stayed on the platforms .Point to be noted is that Kaaval Karangal is a synchronised approach connecting all stakeholders for greater coordination.
In the initiative, more than 40 non-governmental organisations, 120 volunteers, 148 private homes, staff belonging to GCC, Health department and 108 ambulance services were roped in. To handle and associate with other agencies, a woman inspector was appointed. The Helpline number is 9444717100.
It must be recalled that in July in 2021 as many as 127 rescued and sheltered persons from north India were identified under Kaaval Karangal initiative with help from NGOs and they were sent to Apnaghar an NGO belonging to Bharatpur in Rajasthan. Then they were reunited with their family members. Thirty eight persons belonging to states like Kerala, Karnataka, AP, Telangana etc were brought by Kaaval Karangal from Apnaghar and these persons were re-united 35 persons with their families.
Periodical review is being conducted with all the stakeholders to identify issues and improve the functioning and this was mentioned by additional commissioner of police Mr. J. Loganathan. Chennai police commissioner Mr. Shankar Jiwal also plays his role in the effective functioning of Kaaval Karangal.
