Lack of funds so no flood mitigation works in Chennai!!

The monsoon season is fast approaching now but the flood mitigation works that would be carried out by the Water Resources Department or WRD in and around Chennai haven`t begun. The lack of funds has been cited as the main reason for not starting the flood mitigation works.

It was explained by a senior official from WRD that after the 2015 monsoon most places in and around Adyar River such as Mudichur, Manimangalam, Somangalam etc have been flooded.  It must be noted that the river and its distributaries were widened at an amount of Rs 25 crores. In December 2021, a DPR regarding permanent solutions for 18 spots at Rs 1297.49 crores was submitted to the TN government. This was regarding north and south Chennai.

Amount of Rs 250 crores only were allocated to widen the Kosasthalaiyar River and Adyar River, for bund strengthening and for constructing SWD`s etc. No funds have been allocated for the rest of the work.

Unless the remaining funds get released it would be difficult to manage floods in low lying localities in Chennai and this was as per the senior officer from WRD. It was later bought out by another officer from WRD that the proposal for monsoon preparedness work was submitted a week back to the state government and it would be approved in a few days. It is now hoped that the tenders for preparing canals to divert flood water would begin by the end of the week.
