Stray cattle on the streets and Chennai are inseparable it seems!!
Truth is that there are several streets in Chennai with stray cattle now and these stray cattle have been creating many issues for the public. It must not be forgotten that on 8th September a heifer went berserk on the arterial Anna Salai in Chennai and it had injured a few motorcycle riders is well known. It was later brought under control by a local trader and he tied the animal to the pole.
He spoke about how he had tied the animal to a pole near Government Estate metro station to avoid accidents on the road in the peak hour. After the traffic had reduced on the arterial road, the animal was set free by the police around 10:30 pm. It was mentioned by an official that GCC has got responsibility to control stray cattle but residents and traders seldom call the helpline number 1913 to complain about the stray cattle on the street.
In the past few days, due to the presence of stray cattle on the streets, there have been few accidents on the arterial roads. Mr. Madhan Mohan, councillor of ward 14 revealed that the residents had complained about the stray cattle. He spoke about how the officials inspected a piece of land near Krishnampet burial ground ten days back for constructing a facility for the stray cattle,
Many steps have been proposed by local MLAs belonging to many constituencies for controlling stray cattle but most of the steps have not taken off. More than 100 families in each of the 15 GCC zones depend on the cattle for their livelihood and they have more than 1500 cows and buffaloes. There are some families that have been maintaining more than 200 cows and buffaloes in large pieces of land for so many generations also.
