249 battery operated vehicles or BoVs to be deployed by GCC in Chennai!!

For the collection of waste at the doorsteps of the Chennai residents, on Wednesday, in some GCC zones, a total of 249 battery operated vehicles of BoV would be deployed. It is now said that these BoV would be the last batch to start primary collection. It must be noted that GCC would be launching a city-wide waste segregation campaign. There would be an improvement in the door-to-door collection of waste in more than 20lakhs households in 15 GCC zones. This was mentioned by some officials belonging to the Chennai Corporation.

The efficiency of primary collection of waste would get better with the help of battery operated vehicles. The waste from several households would be collected and the waste would be channelized for the processing centres. This was as per Mr. N. Mahesan, chief engineer, solid waste management or SWM of GCC. In Chennai, there are now 196 wet waste and 160 dry waste processing centres.

At the proposed integrated facility at Kodungaiyur, these BoV would be playing crucial roles in the segregated waste processing and this would in addition to the processing centres. Soon, DPR for the project for the facility would be prepared.

In this week, Tondiarpet zone would get 67 BoV`s, Royapuram zone would get 33 BoV`s, ThiruVi Ka Nagar 55 BoV`s, Anna Nagar zone would get 55 BoV`s and Ambattur would get 33 BoV`s. In the 5 GCC zones, as many as 5 BoV`s were proposed to be deployed.  To improve the primary waste collection in Chennai, BoV`s have been deployed by private conservancy operators in the remaining zones
