Patients diagnosed with an excess rate of heart beats or Atrial Fibrillation or AF could heave a sigh of relief now!!
Chennai based Apollo Hospitals has treated 4 patients with this issue successfully now with a novel procedure. This has caught the attention of many now. Cryo balloon ablation is the name of this new procedure and was used for these four patients.
This therapy has been in use in the developed nations for nearly a decade but in India this procedure started just 6 months back. This was pointed out by Dr. A.M. Karthigesan, senior consultant cardiologist at the Apollo Hospitals.
He threw light on how the 4 patients had abnormally high rates of heart beats and how this atrial fibrillation condition worsens and becomes a permanent issue for the 50peercrent of the patients who develop the condition. This AF could lead to strokes also in the future.
It is worth mentioning that when the speed of the heart increases from the normal 70 to 80 beats per minute the blood (instead of emptying into the heart chamber) would stagnate and clot. Later on, the clots could travel to the brain and could result in the stroke.
This arrhythmic condition or AF has been treated till now with the help of radio frequency energy. The medical treatment for this condition was just 40percent successful. The medicines were expensive and they created many side effects in the patients and these side effects lead to deaths. The main advantage in cryo balloon ablation procedure was the high success rate of 80percent.
Cryo balloon ablation procedure:
Here, through a balloon, high pressure nitric oxide in liquid form is introduced into the atrial chamber to stun the tissues that would come in contact with the nitric oxide as it falls to minus 50 degrees Celsius. By this, the atrial fibrillation condition is treated in the patients.
