Crackdown on the indiscriminate dumping of construction waste has been launched by GCC now. Some public members have urged GCC to give preference to clearing those sites where the construction of SWD was taken up.
In the 15 GCC zones, the Chennai Corporation recently formed flying squads to inspect the various construction sites three times per week to identify and remove debris dumped in the public places in Chennai. These flying squads would also be doing their work of acting against encroachments and connecting sewer lines to SWD. From many public places in Chennai, GCC removed 1290 tonnes of construction waste on Tuesday.
Truth is that many Chennaites complain about the delay in clearing the debris in places where SWD works are going on.
Accumulation of debris has led to issues on the streets and this was as per Mr. N. Manoharan of Adyar. He added that in a few streets about half the carriageway could not be used now due to dug up earth lying. He concluded that the GCC has been clearing the debris but slowly only.
Some residents belonging to Sai Baba Colony in Virugambakkam brought out that a contractor dumped construction debris due to SWD on an open ground in their locality.
