Thinking of where to go during the weekends in Chennai ,then Medai would be the ideal spot for relaxation and fun!!
A year back, in Alwarpet in chennai Medai, one of the go-to weekend hubs was opened. Mr. B Charles was the man behind this cultural space in Chennai. It is true that opening a cultural space without any funding is very difficult and that too amidst the Coronavirus pandemic. On this coming 30th October, Medai would have completed one year.
It was after the devastating second Coronavirus infection wave, this Media (a 150 seater black box theatre) was opened in Alwarpet. At that point of time, spaces like auditoriums and theatres were functioning at just 50% of the capacity to maintain social distance to prevent the spread of Coronavirus infection. Then, a third infection wave came and the business was dull till the end of February.
Mr. Charles spoke about how it was very difficult for him to run the show from October to February. Truth is that many artists were reluctant to perform live and the audiences were scared regarding the infection spreading. Now, many Chennaites prefer to go to Medai for having fun during the weekends.
As per Mr. Charles (who worked as a lighting designer previously), his work took him to several venues across the country . He added that he got the idea of a space on his own. Since he worked with many performing artistes he had the idea of what these artistes look out for in a venue.
The funds for this space came from his friends, family and well wishers etc and the resources were limited only as there was just little access to the corporate funding. Point is that there has been no compromise made on the quality inspite of the limited resources.
