The important piece of information is that at the Koyambedu market in Chennai the sales of vegetables have reduced by 40 percent now due to the heavy rains in the city in the last week. This has led to a slash in the prices of the vegetables here now.
Secretary, Koyambedu Wholesale Market Merchants Association, Mr. P. Sukumaran spoke about how atleast 450 vehicles of vegetables arrived at the Klouambedu wholesale market complex. He added that the peak hours for the business here was between 2am and 6am in the morning.
It must be noted that due to continuous rains the sales of vegetables have dropped drastically now compared to last week. The vegetables now are being sold at low prices and it was mainly to avoid wastage. The prices of veggies would increase if there is shortage in the supply of vegetables at this market. The prices of all vegetables have come down now except for tomatoes, carrots and drumsticks etc. These veggies are being sold for Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kilo. Just recently, the prices of onions soared to Rs 30 per kg due to continuous rains that impacted the onions supply at the market.
Vegetables like beans, broad beans were sold for Rs 40 per kg and brinjal for Rs 20 per kg. It is worthy to note that watery veggies such as pumpkin, cucumber, chow chow etc are sold for Rs 10 per kg. On the other hand, the retail vendors experienced superb brisk sales and the prices increased by Rs 10 when compared to the wholesale prices.
