The 5% rebate promise made by the Chennai Corporation has proved to be successful now as the property tax collection for the second half year between 1st to 15th October has surpassed Rs 150 crores. It is now said that the plan from GCC for collection of property taxes might be on the track but the IT infrastructure has been poor. There are many server failures now and this has led to delays.
It was brought to light by a tax collector in Chennai that special property tax camps were conducted in places with big apartments and gated communities etc.He explained that after doing everything to collect property taxes, the handheld devices show server down and it makes the residents angry.
The data from Chennai Corporation in the last half yearly from April to September Rs 246 crores out of Rs 698 crores was received through website/ mobile apps etc. The tax collectors collected the remaining of Rs 452 crores.
There are many times that the amount would get debited but the payment would not reflect for many days. This was mainly while making payments through websites. This was brought out by a resident.
Over the last few months, the pending as well as failed transactions have been brought down. This was according to some senior officers in Chennai Corporation. It is learnt that The corporation has been working with banks and teams to change the scheduling algorithm for the transaction process. Truth is that from several thousands the number of pending transactions have been brought down to about 30 now.
