The lack of supply of vegetables at the Koyambedu market in Chennai has resulted in an increase in the prices of vegetables like onions, tomatoes, green onions etc. It must be noted that the housewives are unhappy regarding the increase in the prices of vegetables.
Every day, from states like Maharashtra, AP, Karnataka etc vegetables would arrive at the Koyambedu market. Vegetables also come from several places belonging to Tamil Nadu also. Every day, 150 tonnes of small onions arrive at this important market in Chennai. Yesterday, the market received just 60tonnes of small onions. As a result, the small onions were sold for Rs 125 per kg.
At the small retail shops present in the suburban places in Chennai, one kilogram of small onions was sold at Rs 150. Three days back, one kilo of big onion was sold for Rs 18 and yesterday morning it was sold for Rs 40.
It must be taken into account that one kg of country tomato was sold from Rs 28 to Rs 35, Bangalore tomato from Rs 35 to Rs 40, ginger from Rs 30 to Rs 70. It was mentioned by Mr. S.S. Muthukumar, Koyambedu vegetable small wholesalers association that due to shortage of supply the prices of small/big onions, tomatoes, ginger, chickpeas etc have increased.
