If you are confused regarding the presence of robotic multipurpose elevators, amphibian equipment on the Vyasarpadi Canal, Kodungaiyur Canal, Captain Cotton Canal etc in Chennai, here comes the news!!
The residents belonging to the Tondiarpet zone in north Chennai could feel relieved and happy now. To prevent inundation or water stagnation in the locality, canals present in the Tondiarpet zone/ zone 4 have been cleared by GCC now. Point is that Captain Cotton Canal and Kodungaiyur canal were cleared by the GCC. De-silting and removal of obstruction from the water bodies have been carried out by the civic body authorities. The work was carried out after a decade here.
According to a zonal officer it was clear that the canals were not cleared for many years. He added that during the monsoon season when the canals overflow the residential areas would get flooded. The stagnating water would drain only when the water level in the canal decreases. Many steps have been taken to prevent inundation this year.
Garbage and water hyacinth have been present in the 3 canals (mentioned above) for a long time and they have been posing several issues till now. It is worthy to note that these are now cleared with the help of robotic multipurpose elevators, amphibian equipment etc by the civic body.
It is learnt that every day 300 Metric Tonnes of waste are being collected and in the last 10 days 7000 MT of waste were removed from the water bodies. These works would get over by this week. For draining out the stagnated water, GCC authorities have provided wells in 9 places.
It was brought out by an official that the depth of the well was 4.5m and the rainwater would not reach up to 2.5m. He added that afterwards water would be pumped out from the well.
