The healthcare workers belonging to GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation are very busy now conducting door to door inspection and mosquito eradication activities now to control dengue. In the areas that come under GCC, a total of 954 permanent mosquito control workers and 2317 contract workers have ebn divided into 2084 units for carrying out the mosquito control works.
It is worth mentioning that for the mosquito control activities 224 mosquito repellent sprayers, 120 power sprayers, 300 battery operated and hand operated sprayers, 229 fumigation machines, 8 small smog machines and 67 vehicles fitted with smog are being used now by the GCC.
In all the wards, as many as 400 persons have been deployed with mosquito sprayers to use them in SWD present in the municipal areas. To spray the water ways with repellents, for 247kms a total of 128 personnel have been employed. Truth is that smog machines are being used to destroy mosquito larvae. Fumigating machines are also being used now to carry out other extermination works.
The GCC workers have carried out surveys in more than 10.72 lakhs houses in chennai and they have found out that 10052 houses had mosquito breeding places. They have also inspected open wells, construction sites, overhead storage tanks etc.
According to a civic officer, mosquito breeding was more than likely and requested the public to remove unused tyres, coconut shells, broken jugs, broken cement tanks etc from their houses/ surroundings to avoid the spreading of dengue. He added that the residents must remove stagnant water from the flower pots etc weekly once.
