Now, a government order or GO has been issued by the state housing and urban development department regarding the expansion of CMA or Chennai Metropolitan Area. With this, the long pending proposal of expanding CMA has been realised.
As per the GO, as many as 1225 villages present in Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Chengalpet and Ranipet districts would come under the purview of CMDA or Chennai metropolitan Development Authority. It must be taken into note that for the last 10 years deliberations have been going regarding the expansion of CMA.
The GO date 21st October brought out that taluks belonging to Arakkonam, Sriperumbudur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpet and Tiruvalur have been appended with CMA. Member secretary of CMDA, Mr. Anshul Mishra explained that the expanded CMA would cover 5904 sqkms. It is known that at present CMA covers only 1180 sq kms. Recently, the CM of Tamil Nadu, Mr. MK. Stalin gave his approval regarding the proposal to expand the CMA at the meeting held in the Secretariat.
It must be noted that the CMDA has suggested dividing the entire CMA into 3 parts namely the existing CMA would be known as CMA central and the proposed expanded areas as CMA north and CMA south etc.
CMA North:
Places like Gummidipondi, Ponneri, Uthukottai,Tiruttani ( partly), Arakkonam (partly), Tiruvallur, Poonamallee( partly) and Sriperumbudur would be present under CMA North. There would be 8 taluks under CMA North for a distance of 2908 sq kms.
CMA South:
The CMA South would be of a distance of 1809 sq kms with 7 taluks. Places like Kancheepuram, Walajabad, Chengalpet, Thirukalukundram, Thiruporur, Kundrathur (partly) and Vandalur (partly).
CMA Central:
The existing CMA of 1189 sq kms would be considered as CMA Central.
The sensational piece of information is that Hyderabad Metropolitan Region has the largest area of 7222 sq kms and after that CMA with an area of 5904sq kms would be the second in India.
It must not be forgotten that the TN government initially proposed to expand CMA to cover 8878 sq kms by including parts of Ranipet and Tiruvannamalai districts several years back itself. The expansion proposal plan was reduced after many public consultation meetings with the stakeholders etc.
